House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7 Recap: War Reaches a Dangerous Turning Point

The battle for the Iron Throne reaches a fever pitch in the third season of House of the Dragon and, in particular, season 3 episode 7, as rival houses perform all manner of underhanded tricks to weaken their enemies, with dire results for both politics and the dragons that fight in this war. Only several episodes are left before the series’ much-anticipated season finale, so it’s no surprise that the plot twists in unexpected ways, delivering yet more reasons why House of the Dragon is one of the most anticipated fantasy shows of recent years.

Unlike many previous episodes of House of the Dragon season 3, this one lacks a large-scale battle but instead focuses on the aftermath of the most critical events. It appears that not a single major house has backed off from the coming all-out war, and now, the entire land from Harrenhal to King’s Landing and Tumbleton is on the brink of total chaos.

Much of the plot of House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7 revolves around Harrenhal, where Prince Aemond continues his convalescence and attempts to further his prospects. Once again, the ancient castle becomes a breeding ground for conspiracies and double-dealing.

Alicent Hightower, despite her best efforts, fails to achieve her desired goal. However, her meeting with Aemond and Alys Rivers serves to highlight the extent to which distrust had poisoned the relationships of the Greens at Harrenhal, as every conversation with Alys Rivers seems to carry some hidden agenda. Notably, Alys Rivers proves to be one of the most enigmatic characters in the series – her ability to manipulate and understand people makes her almost untouchable, and Aemond, who continues to seek allies around him, seems to have few options besides trusting these untrustworthy individuals.

Queen Rhaenyra is spending most of the time trying to keep control over the ongoing complex military operation. Now she has to constantly take into account all the incoming reports and make important decisions, leaving aside some personal issues.

The queen’s and her brother’s relationship is now even more complicated, as they cannot agree on what has been done recently. It seems that trust is the only thing that can help in the future, as well as the absence of any suspicion that can lead to rash decisions harmful to the crown.

In the meantime, Rhaenyra’s small council is having its own problems with money, tactics, and strategy, indicating that the war is much more complicated than fighting against the monsters her dragons have been battling.

One of the best moments in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7 was the impressive confrontation of several dragons in the Vale.

Dragons confront each other above the Vale in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7

Firstly, the battle between various riders searching for Sheepstealer is exciting and thrilling.

The episode reminded the audience how beautiful yet vicious dragons are, even when they are controlled by their owners. Then, this task is complicated by the rider’s personal feelings, including Rhaena, who wants to prove her worth but cannot deny the massive responsibilities that come with a dragon in war. Finally, the fight is one of the strongest visual elements in the episode, as it manages to capture both the excitement of battle and the characters’ internal conflicts rather than following one or the other exclusively.

Elsewhere, King Aegon continues his slow and painful convalescence following grievous injuries. His recovery has been uncertain up until this point, and the prospects for him reasserting himself as king have not improved throughout the duration of several prior episodes, but it seems that the situation might change for the better in Episode 7, potentially to the delight of the fans of House Blackfyre.

The unexpected arrival of the dragon not only boosts the morale of the Blackfyre supporters but also highlights the importance of Aegon’s bond with his mount, and, more importantly, his place in the greater scheme of Westerosi military affairs.

While his physical state is not optimal, it would seem that Aegon’s fighting spirit has not been broken, and he is ready to continue pursuing his claim to the throne.

Inside the Red Keep, Helaena has more visions of the future that can be connected to tragedies yet to come and her cryptic dreams continue to blur the lines between reality and prophecies, leaving the characters and viewers alike questioning what the visions could mean.

Meanwhile, Rhaenyra tries to uncover the knowledge from Helaena’s visions that could benefit them in the upcoming battles, but the information proves to be complicated and creates more questions than answers.

Furthermore, the power struggles of the realm inside the capital continue as emissaries conduct their own agendas, and it becomes more difficult for rulers to control all events.

The military situation is further complicated by the growing attention to Tumbleton.

Lord Ormund seeks to exploit the Greens’ advantageous position, both in terms of traditional military preparations and diplomatic and political means, in order to achieve the goal of holding off the enemy at all costs.

One of the most surprising twists of this episode is that Ulf, who has been serving the Blacks, is prepared to change sides.

His simmering resentment and ambition can be capitalized on by the right employer offering him the rewards and recognition he desires.

Meanwhile, if these manipulations continue to bear fruit, then the outcome of the entire conflict may well change before the end of the season.

Although the series seems to revolve predominantly around one of its most prominent creations, house of the dragon season 3 episode 7 manages, as usual, to focus on its amazing characters.

Rhaenyra is forced to confront her fears about leading the country, while Alicent has to live with the results of her actions. Aemond, despite his considerable assets, seems to be losing his only friend, while Daemon tries to at once remain loyal to Rhaenyra and do what he considers right during the war.

All of this and several more plots lines create the seemingly unstoppable march towards the large-scale destruction of the country, which seems inevitable at this point.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7 manages to set up the season finale perfectly by providing a mixture of political intrigue, interpersonal drama, and impressive dragon action. Rather than rushing toward the climax, the episode sets up multiple plots for the finale, ensuring that every important character will have their moment to shine.

By involving every major faction, introducing new threats, and showcasing the dragons, House of the Dragon prepares viewers for a season finale that will deliver on all fronts. Westeros is on the brink of total devastation if Episode 7 is anything to go by.
