7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Mexico, Tremors Felt in Guatemala and El Salvador

A strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit southern Mexico on Friday, with tremors felt in Guatemala and El Salvador. The quake’s centre was near Mexico’s Pacific coast. A tsunami warning was issued but later lifted when officials found no major threat. Early reports mention only minor injuries and limited damage. Emergency teams are still watching the affected areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake’s centre was about 48 kilometres southwest of Aquiles Serdán in Chiapas. Since the quake was shallow, it caused strong shaking in southern Mexico and nearby countries.

Soon after the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) warned that dangerous tsunami waves could reach coastal areas within 300 kilometres of the centre. Authorities told residents and tourists to avoid beaches and low-lying areas to stay safe. Monitoring  stations detected only small changes in sea levels. Mexico’s Navy still advised people to avoid beaches temporarily while officials completed safety inspections.

Emergency crews went across Chiapas to check buildings and public places. Officials said two people were hurt during the earthquake. One person was injured after jumping from the third floor of a building, and another was hurt when a heavy door fell inside a car dealership.

Authorities also responded to reports. Authorities also checked reports of cracked walls, damaged ceilings, gas leaks, and minor damage in several buildings. But officials said there was no widespread destruction or major damage to important infrastructure.m said preliminary assessments showed no serious damage following the earthquake. The USGS recorded several aftershocks following the main earthquake, including one measuring 6.0. Experts say aftershocks are normal after big earthquakes and can last for hours or even days.
