Washington, D.C., Weather Today: Severe Storms, Tornado Alerts, and Code Red Air Quality Impact Millions

On Saturday, severe thunderstorms, tornado alerts, extreme heat, and a Code Red air quality alert impacted millions of people in the Washington, D.C. area. Weather officials warned about heavy rain, strong winds, flash flooding, and unhealthy air and urged everyone to stay inside and keep up with weather updates.

The dangerous weather hit Washington, D.C., northern Virginia, and several Maryland counties. High temperatures and smoky skies made things uncomfortable before strong storms moved through in the afternoon and evening.

A strong line of thunderstorms crossed the Washington area on Saturday, bringing heavy rain, frequent lightning, strong winds, and a chance of isolated tornadoes.

Tornado watches were announced for Montgomery, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Frederick, and Howard counties as the weather became more likely to produce rotating storms. A tornado warning was briefly in effect for parts of Montgomery and Frederick counties before it ended later in the evening.

No major tornado damage was reported right away, but emergency officials reminded everyone to always take tornado warnings seriously. People in affected areas were told to go to the lowest level of their homes and stay away from windows until the warning was over.

The severe thunderstorm watch for the Washington, D.C. area ended later on Saturday as the storms slowly weakened.

The storms brought heavy rain at times, raising the risk of flash flooding in some areas. Streets with poor drainage filled up quickly, and low-lying spots saw temporary flooding.

Weather experts told drivers not to travel through flooded roads, since even shallow water can be dangerous. People were encouraged to put off any unnecessary trips until things got better. Forecasters said showers and storms would last through late Saturday night and end by sunrise on Sunday.

In addition to the severe weather, the Washington, D.C., forecast warned of dangerous air quality for much of Saturday. Thick smoke and haze blanketed the area, prompting a Code Red Air Quality Alert for several hours.

A Code Red alert means the air is unhealthy for everyone, not just those with health problems. Health officials warned that being outside for too long could raise the risk of breathing problems, coughing, eye irritation, and other issues.

Children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with asthma, heart disease, or lung problems were told to stay indoors as much as possible. Storms

Meteorologists said that changing winds and thunderstorms would help clear the smoke from the air. As the storms moved through, air quality was expected to improve, going from Code Red to Code Orange, with further improvement likely overnight.

Even though the air should be cleaner by Sunday, health experts still recommend that sensitive groups limit outdoor activities until air quality is back to normal.

Before the storms, temperatures rose into the low and mid-90s, and humidity made it feel hotter than 100 degrees in many places. The mix of high heat and poor air quality increased health risks, especially for people working outdoors.

Officials told people to drink lots of water, stay in air-conditioned places, wear light clothing, and avoid hard outdoor activities during the hottest hours.

The forecast for Washington, D.C. shows better weather starting Sunday. Skies should be partly sunny, with afternoon highs in the upper 80s. Monday will likely stay warm and mostly dry, giving a short break from storms. Humidity is expected to rise again by Tuesday, bringing another chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Residents are encouraged to follow these safety precautions:

  • Stay indoors when air quality reaches unhealthy levels.
  • Avoid outdoor exercise during periods of smoke or extreme heat.
  • Keep windows and doors closed if haze is visible.
  • Never drive through flooded roads or standing water.
  • Monitor local weather alerts for updates on severe storms and tornado warnings.
  • Drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks if spending time outdoors.

Saturday’s weather in Washington, D.C. brought several hazards, including severe storms, tornado alerts, flash-flood risks, dangerous heat, and a Code Red air quality alert. While things should get better on Sunday, forecasters say people should keep an eye on the weather, since more summer storms could happen later in the week.

With better air quality and cooler temperatures expected after the storms, the area should be safer. Still, it’s important to stay informed and follow official weather advice as summer weather continues in Washington, D.C.
