NYC Flash Flooding Today: Heavy Rain Floods Brooklyn and Queens as Northeast Storm Puts 60 Million at Risk

NYC FLASH FLOODING — Heavy rain flooded streets across Brooklyn and Queens on Monday as a powerful Northeast storm put more than 60 million people from Ohio to Massachusetts and Virginia under flood alerts. Officials warned that more rain could lead to life-threatening flooding, travel delays, and power outages.

The National Weather Service issued Flash Flood Warnings for parts of New York City as intense thunderstorms dumped rain at rates of up to 3 inches per hour. Forecasters said some areas across the Northeast could receive up to 8 inches of rain, raising the risk of flash flooding in cities and low-lying communities.

Some of the worst flooding was reported in Brooklyn and Queens, where streets quickly filled with water after hours of heavy rainfall.

In Coney Island, Neptune Avenue was flooded, and vehicles struggled to move through the area. Flooding was also reported along East 28th Street in Sheepshead Bay, while standing water forced the temporary closure of parts of the Belt Parkway, causing major traffic delays.

Emergency crews responded to multiple flooding incidents across the city. Officials urged drivers to stay off flooded roads and reminded residents that even a small amount of moving water can be dangerous.

A Flood Watch remains in effect across the New York City metropolitan area through early Tuesday as more heavy rain is expected.

The storm is affecting far more than New York City.

Meteorologists said the system formed after a holiday weekend heat wave brought extreme temperatures to much of the East Coast. Heat, humidity, and slow-moving thunderstorms created ideal conditions for intense rainfall. The  highest flood risk includes Long Island, southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts, parts of New Jersey, and the Philadelphia metropolitan area, where flooding was reported in several neighborhoods.

Weather experts warned that already saturated ground could cause rapid flooding as additional rain falls throughout the day.

New York City officials encouraged residents to stay alert and monitor weather updates.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said city agencies spent the weekend clearing storm drains and preparing neighborhoods vulnerable to flooding. He also advised residents living in basement apartments to be ready to move to higher ground if conditions become dangerous. Governor  Kathy Hochul warned that flash floods can develop quickly and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.

Officials reminded residents never to drive through flooded streets and to follow emergency instructions if evacuation orders are issued.

The severe weather also brought strong winds that knocked down trees and damaged power lines across New York City.

In the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx, a large tree fell onto power lines, cutting electricity to nearby buildings. Across Queens, fallen trees blocked roads as utility crews worked to restore service.

Con Edison reported that more than 1,200 customers were without power Monday afternoon. The company also asked customers in southeastern Queens to conserve electricity while emergency repairs continued.

Storm damage extended into Westchester County, where fallen trees, damaged utility poles, and road closures were reported in several communities.

The storm also affected nearby states, including New Jersey, where severe weather damaged buildings, and Pennsylvania, where flash flooding disrupted travel in the Philadelphia area.

Forecasters expect periods of heavy rain to continue through Monday night before the storm slowly moves offshore. With the ground already saturated, even moderate rainfall could trigger more flash flooding.

Residents are urged to stay informed through official weather updates, avoid flooded roads, and remain prepared as emergency crews continue responding across New York City and the Northeast.
