Chicago Flooding Today: Roads Closed, Drivers Stranded as Flash Flood Warnings Continue

CHICAGO FLOODING TODAY — Powerful storms dropped several inches of rain in just a few hours, causing major travel problems across the city and surrounding suburbs on Saturday. As a result, flooded roads, stranded drivers, power outages, and emergency rescues were reported across northern Illinois, and officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

The National Weather Service (NWS) kept flood and flash flood warnings in effect for parts of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will counties. Even though the heaviest rain ended by Saturday evening, officials warned that rivers, streams, and low-lying areas could continue flooding into Sunday.

Strong thunderstorms moved through the Chicago region overnight and into Saturday morning. They brought intense rainfall that quickly overwhelmed storm drains and flooded streets.

Some locations received up to six inches of rain, creating dangerous driving conditions across several communities. Emergency officials said roads, underpasses, and neighborhoods with poor drainage were among the hardest hit.

Authorities advised residents to stay away from flooded roads because water levels can rise quickly and become dangerous without warning.

One of the biggest travel disruptions occurred on the Bishop Ford Freeway, where floodwater forced officials to close parts of the highway in both directions for several hours.

Several vehicles became stranded as water covered the roadway, while emergency crews worked to assist motorists trapped by rising floodwater.

Flooding also caused travel problems in Naperville, Bartlett, Elgin, Harvey, Downers Grove, and parts of Kane County. As storm drains struggled to handle the heavy rainfall, many local streets became impassable.

Officials reminded drivers that even shallow floodwater can hide road damage or sweep vehicles away.

Firefighters and emergency crews responded to multiple rescue calls as drivers became trapped inside stalled vehicles.

In several suburbs, local residents also helped push stranded cars to safety after floodwater surrounded vehicles.

Emergency officials repeated the flood safety message: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. They said most vehicle rescues happen because drivers underestimate the depth of standing water.

Authorities encouraged anyone encountering flooded roads to turn around rather than attempt to drive through.

The storms also knocked out electricity for thousands of customers across northern Illinois.

More than 58,000 utility customers lost power early Saturday as strong winds and heavy rain damaged electrical equipment and power lines.

Repair crews worked throughout the day to restore electricity, but some neighborhoods remained without service into the evening.

Residents were urged to stay away from fallen power lines and report electrical hazards immediately.

The severe weather turned deadly in Kendall County.

Authorities said a 47-year-old woman died after a large tree crashed onto a camper trailer in Fox Township during the storm. Her two dogs also died.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said no other injuries were reported.

The incident highlights the risks posed by falling trees during severe thunderstorms and high winds.

The storms also disrupted holiday activities across the Chicago area.

The scheduled game between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field was delayed by severe weather and later rescheduled for Saturday evening.

Some Fourth of July celebrations and outdoor events were also postponed or canceled due to heavy rain and lightning that created unsafe conditions.

Although rainfall has eased, weather officials say the threat of flooding is not over. Water continues moving into rivers, creeks, and drainage systems, so flooded roads and low-lying neighborhoods could remain dangerous through Sunday.

Water continues moving into rivers, creeks, and drainage systems, meaning flooded roads and low-lying neighborhoods could remain dangerous through Sunday.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates before traveling and follow instructions from local emergency officials if additional warnings are issued.

Emergency management officials recommend the following safety steps:

  • Never drive through flooded roads or standing water.
  • Stay away from fast-moving floodwater.
  • Avoid downed power lines and damaged electrical equipment.
  • Keep updated with the latest weather alerts.
  • Delay travel if roads are flooded or visibility is poor.

As cleanup begins across the Chicago area, emergency crews will continue to monitor flood conditions and assist affected communities. Until all flood warnings expire and water levels return to normal, officials say residents should remain cautious.
